From November 28 to 29, the 9^th National Conference on Cartography and Geographic Information System was successfully held at the East Lake International Conference Center, Wuhan.

Within the theme of ‘the development of Cartography and Geographic Information Systems in the New era’, the Council invited national and international renowned experts and scholars to communicate cutting-edge theories, advanced technologies, and new development, achievements, ideas and methods of engineering practice and application in the field of cartography and GIS in the new era. The Council also discussed the new challenges and opportunities of cartography and GIS application in the future.

CAS Academician Li Deren from Wuhan University, CAE Academician Wang Jiayao from Information Engineering University, CAS Academician Ye Jiaan from the University of Hong Kong, CAE Academician Guo Renzhong from Shenzhen University, IEAS Academician MiLan Konecny from Masaryk University, ICA Past President Georg Gartner from Vienna University of Technology, Professor William Cartwright from RMIT University, Australia attended the conference.

The Conference opening was presided over by Professor Liu Yaolin. Professor Li Jiancheng, Vice President of WHU, delivered a welcoming speech on behalf of Wuhan University to all participants, then Professor Sun Qun, Professor Georg Gartner and Mr. Xu Yanying delivered speeches successively and expresses their warm congratulations to the conference. Eleven experts and scholars have given thematic academic reports about cartography and GIS.

The conferences was hosted by the School of Resources and Environmental Sciences, Wuhan University. More than 1000 representatives attended the conference.

The opening ceremony of the conference also provided a high definition webcast platform to support online viewing which had more than 7, 000 spectators.
